Visegrád Citadel
The Visegrád Citadel is one of the most spectacular medieval monuments in the Danube Bend, perched on a 333-meter-high rocky peak overlooking the river. The castle was built by King Béla IV after the Mongol invasion of 1241 and became a royal center during the reign of the Angevin kings. For nearly two hundred years, the Hungarian coronation regalia were kept here, highlighting the fortress's strategic and symbolic importance. In 1335, the famous Congress of Visegrád took place within these walls, where the Hungarian, Czech, and Polish monarchs formed a vital economic and political alliance. The Solomon Tower in the lower castle and the riverside Royal Palace form an integral part of the medieval complex. The citadel has one of the most beautiful panoramas in Hungary, with views of the Danube Bend and the winding river below.
