Mátrafüred is a popular resort district of Gyöngyös, situated at an elevation of 350-400 meters at the southern foot of the Mátra Mountains. Known for its subalpine climate and crisp forest air, it has been a favored destination for health and recreation since the late 19th century. The town is connected to nearby Gyöngyös by the historic Mátra narrow-gauge railway, which winds through scenic woodlands. Just outside the resort lies Lake Sástó, the highest artificial lake in Hungary. A striking yellow lookout tower, originally an oil drilling rig, provides a spectacular 360-degree view of the surrounding peaks and the Great Hungarian Plain. Adjacent to the lake is the Oxygen Adrenalin Park, featuring a summer bobsled run, chairlifts, and various adventure activities built into a reclaimed stone quarry. As a major hiking hub, Mátrafüred serves as the starting point for numerous trails leading to landmarks like the Kozmáry Lookout or deeper into the Mátra forest. Local restaurants often serve traditional game dishes paired with white wines from the renowned Mátra wine region. Accessible from Budapest in about an hour via the M3 motorway, it is a good spot for both active sports and peaceful forest retreats.
