Ipeľ River (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Ipeľ river is a scenic waterway in southern Slovakia, best known for its role as the natural state border with Hungary. The river originates in the densely forested Slovak Ore Mountains not far from Lom nad Rimavicou and winds its way in a southwesterly direction. For a length of about 140 kilometers, it exactly traces the border between the two neighboring countries, traversing a quiet, largely agricultural plain. Throughout history, the Ipeľ served as an important transport and trade artery for surrounding towns such as Lučenec and Šahy. The extensive floodplain landscapes along its banks provide crucial resting and nesting sites for numerous rare water birds and amphibians. The river finally flows into the Danube near the Slovak village of Chľaba and the Hungarian town of Szob.
