Sopron Fire Tower (Hungary)

Weather…

The Sopron Fire Tower is the iconic symbol of the city, built upon the foundations of the northern gate of the Roman city wall. Its lower, cylindrical portion is of Roman origin, the middle section features Gothic architecture, and the Baroque balcony and spire were added following the devastating fire of 1676. For centuries, the tower served as a vital watchpoint where trumpeters would signal the passing of hours, the location of fires, or the approach of enemy forces and wine shipments. Following the 1921 referendum, the Loyalty Gate was added to the tower's base in 1928 to commemorate the city's decision to remain part of Hungary. Visitors today can climb 119 steps to reach the circular balcony, which features an expansive view of the medieval city center and the surrounding Sopron Mountains. Standing at 58 meters tall, the tower functions as a museum and a historical landmark, seamlessly blending Roman, Gothic, and Baroque architectural styles into one structure.
