Marcal River (Hungary)

Weather…

The Marcal River is a prominent waterway in western Hungary, originating at the southwestern foothills of the Bakony Mountains near Sumeg. Flowing for approximately 100 kilometers, it moves northward through the Marcal Basin before finally joining the Raba River near the city of Gyor. Historically, the river was characterized by its slow current and extensive marshy surroundings, though 20th-century regulation works significantly altered its original course. The Marcal gained international notoriety in 2010 following the Ajka alumina plant accident, when a catastrophic red mud spill entered the river via the Torna stream, devastating its entire ecosystem. Since then, massive remediation and rehabilitation efforts have been undertaken, allowing the river's biological life to slowly recover, with fish populations and riparian vegetation returning. Today, the Marcal again serves as a vital drainage system for the region and provides habitats for protected species such as the European otter, while its agricultural importance remains high.
