Sebenstein Castle (Austria)

Weather…

Sebenstein Castle, visible from afar on a rock above the town of the same name in Lower Austria, is considered one of the best-preserved castles in the region. The complex was founded around 1180 and served as an important fortress on the border between Austria and Styria. A special feature is its high structural continuity: unlike many other ruins, Sebenstein was never completely destroyed and was expanded into a spacious complex with an outer bailey and main castle in the 15th century. In the 19th century, Prince Johann I of Liechtenstein acquired the castle, had it restored in the romantic spirit of the time, and furnished it with a significant art collection. The castle houses valuable exhibits, including late Gothic sculptures and medieval weapons. The 30-meter-high keep features an impressive panoramic view over the Bucklige Welt and the Steinfeld, illustrating the strategic location of the former defensive castle.
