The Ferto-Hansag National Park encompasses the area surrounding Lake Ferto and the Hansag basin, forming a unique transborder protected area shared between Hungary and Austria. Lake Ferto is the westernmost steppe lake in Central Europe, renowned for its shallow waters and extensive reed beds that serve as a crucial breeding and migratory site for birds. The park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001 in the cultural landscape category, recognizing the centuries-old harmony between the local population and the environment. Over 300 bird species can be spotted here, including the Great White Egret, the Spoonbill, and various rare geese.
