Esterházy Palace (Fertőd) (Hungary)

Weather…

The Esterházy Palace in Fertőd, frequently referred to as the 'Hungarian Versailles,' is the most significant Rococo architectural monument in Hungary. It achieved its current magnificent form during the second half of the 18th century under Prince Nikolaus I Esterházy, known as 'the Magnificent,' who expanded the original hunting lodge into a grand princely residence between 1763 and 1766. The horseshoe-shaped main building contains 126 lavishly decorated rooms, with the Banqueting Hall and the Haydn Hall being the most notable spaces. The world-renowned composer Joseph Haydn lived and worked here for nearly thirty years as the court Kapellmeister, premiering many of his operas and symphonies within these walls. At its zenith, the palace complex boasted an opera house, a marionette theater, and extensive French and English gardens. In 1773, Empress Maria Theresa visited the estate, enjoying the legendary festivities that the Prince organized in her honor. Today, the palace is a key part of the UNESCO World Heritage site and serves as a premier venue for international classical music festivals.
