Lockenhaus Castle
Lockenhaus Castle in Burgenland is a historical knight's castle known for its mystical atmosphere and its association with the Knights Templar. The complex was built in the 13th century and served for centuries as an important defensive structure in the border region. Particularly fascinating is the so-called cult room, an underground hall with unique acoustics whose purpose remains a mystery to this day. The architecture includes Romanesque and Gothic elements, supplemented over time by additions from the Kanizsay and Esterházy families. Since the 1960s, the castle has undergone intensive renovation and now houses a hotel as well as a museum about the history of knightly orders. The castle is also famous for its chamber music festival, which attracts musicians from all over the world. In the surrounding area, there are numerous hiking trails leading through the hilly landscape of the Günser Mountains. The castle is also home to one of Central Europe's largest bat colonies.
