Mattersburg, historically also known as Nagymarton, is located in northern Burgenland at the foot of the Rosalia Mountains. The city is a vital economic and educational center for the surrounding region. A defining feature of the townscape are the imposing railway viaducts of the Mattersburg railway, built in the 19th century as pioneering technical achievements. Mattersburg's history stretches back centuries, with its first documentary mention in 1202 under the name Villa Martini. For centuries, the place was a significant market and border town. In the 20th century, Mattersburg developed into an industrial location, particularly in food processing and construction. The parish church of Saint Martin, a building with Romanesque and Gothic cores, reflects the city's religious permanence. Geographically, the town is traversed by the Wulka river, which waters the fertile plain. In addition to its economic importance, Mattersburg is also known for its active club life and sporting successes. The proximity to the Hungarian border continues to shape cultural exchange and regional cooperation in the Neusiedler See Euroregion today.
