Great Market Hall
The Great Market Hall in Budapest, located at Fővám Square, is the largest and most iconic indoor market in the Hungarian capital. Designed by architect Samu Pecz in a Neo-Gothic style, the building was inaugurated in 1897 after a three-year construction period. Its most striking feature is the roof covered with colorful glazed Zsolnay ceramic tiles from Pécs. Spanning over 10,000 square meters, the hall provides space on three levels for hundreds of vendors offering traditional Hungarian food, spices, textiles, and crafts. The interior's monumental steel structure reflects the pinnacle of late 19th-century engineering. Despite suffering significant damage during World War II, the hall was fully restored in the 1990s and received the prestigious FIABCI Prix d’Excellence award. Today, it remains a vital commercial center for locals and a top destination for visitors exploring Hungarian gastronomy.
