Újpest, currently the 4th District of Budapest, was founded in 1831 by Count István Károlyi as an independent settlement and rapidly emerged as one of Hungary's premier industrial hubs. Its favorable location on the banks of the Danube led to the establishment of significant leather, chemical, and textile factories, including the renowned Wolfner leather works. Unlike the medieval quarters of Buda, Újpest was a planned industrial town featuring a grid-like street layout and a strong working-class identity. It achieved city status in 1907 before being officially incorporated into Greater Budapest in 1950. A major cultural landmark of the district is Újpest FC, founded in 1885, which is one of the oldest and most successful football clubs in Hungarian history. The eclectic-style Town Hall remains a focal point of local architecture. Today, Újpest is transitioning from its industrial past into a modern residential district, boasting extensive green spaces and recreational areas along the Danube riverfront.
