Kamoa Mountains (Guyana)

Weather…

The Kamoa Mountains are a remote mountain range in the deep south of Guyana, near the border with Brazil in the Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo district. This region is characterized by a mixture of granite formations and dense primary rainforest, forming one of the country's most pristine wilderness areas. Geologically, the Kamoa Mountains differ from the sandstone tepuis of the west, as they consist predominantly of the crystalline basement rock of the Guiana Shield. The mountains serve as a significant watershed between the Amazon and Essequibo drainage basins, with numerous streams originating here. Biological diversity is enormous, encompassing rare mammals such as the jaguar and the giant otter, as well as a multitude of bird species. This area is the traditional land of the Wai-Wai people, who play a central role in protecting this ecosystem. Due to extreme isolation and the absence of any infrastructure, the Kamoa Mountains have remained almost inaccessible to the modern world. Scientific studies in this region are rare and mostly focus on ethnobotanical research and large-scale conservation strategies.
