Koubia is a remote town situated on the high, rugged plateaus of northern Fouta Djallon and serves as the capital of its namesake prefecture. The geographical setting is defined by steep valleys and rocky landscapes, making it one of the highest and most isolated towns in Guinea. The climate is characterized by significant temperature swings, with hot days and cool nights, especially during the Harmattan season. Koubia's economy is almost entirely centered on pastoralism, with cattle herding being the primary livelihood of the Fula population. Livestock from Koubia is highly valued and often traded in the larger markets of Labé. Subsistence farming also exists in the fertile valley pockets, producing crops like fonio, millet, and beans. Due to its historical isolation, Koubia has preserved its traditional social structures and Islamic educational centers. The town acts as a local commercial post for surrounding pastoral communities. The surrounding environment gives untouched mountain scenery, providing great potential for eco-tourism and trekking, though modern infrastructure remains very limited.
