Kimolos is characterized by its volcanic geology and chalk-like minerals; in fact, the Greek word for chalk, "kimolia", is derived from the island's name. The local economy was traditionally based on mining and agriculture, which kept mass tourism at bay. The main settlement, Chorio, is built on a hill around the remains of a 16th-century Venetian Kastro, located just one kilometer inland from the main ferry port at Psathi. The coastline is dotted with diverse beaches and coves. Prasa, also known as Agios Georgios, is famous for its coarse white sand created by the surrounding chalky rocks. To the south, Mponatsa features a long stretch of shallow water, while the beaches of Klima and Gkioni are lined with traditional syrmata, which are boathouses carved directly into the soft cliffs with brightly painted wooden doors. Agios Minas provides a pebble shoreline exposed to the Aegean winds. More secluded coastal spots such as Soufi, Monastiria, Pano Mersini, and Kato Mersini require driving over unpaved dirt roads or arriving by boat. Tis Panagias T'avlaki is a rocky inlet, and Vromolimni features geothermal activity near the water. The lack of large hotel complexes preserves the island's mid-20th-century character, making it a focal point for geology enthusiasts and independent travelers.
