Mytilene is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, serving as the capital of Lesbos and the administrative seat of the North Aegean region. Spreading across seven hills between a northern and a southern harbor, the city's skyline is dominated by the Castle of Mytilene, one of the largest and best-preserved medieval fortresses in the Mediterranean. Historically, the city was an intellectual powerhouse of the ancient Greek world, famously associated with the lyric poetess Sappho and the philosopher Epicurus. The modern urban fabric is a mosaic of architectural styles, featuring elegant 19th-century neoclassical mansions, Ottoman landmarks like the Yeni Mosque, and the imposing Church of Agios Therapon with its distinctive dome. The waterfront promenade, the 'Prokimea,' acts as the social heart of the city, lined with bustling cafes and administrative buildings. Mytilene is also a major industrial hub for the production of ouzo and high-quality olive oil, reflecting its fertile surroundings. As the seat of the University of the Aegean, the town maintains a youthful energy while carefully preserving its vast archaeological heritage, including a well-preserved ancient theater.
