Chios Town, locally known as Chora, is the administrative capital and principal port of the island of Chios, located directly opposite the Erythraean peninsula of Turkey. The city's identity is defined by its deep maritime history and its historic monopoly on the production of mastic, a natural resin harvested in the island's southern villages. The dominant feature of the town is the Castle of Chios, a massive fortress with roots in the Byzantine era that was extensively fortified by the Genoese during their rule from 1346 to 1566. Uniquely, the interior of the castle remains an animated residential district with traditional houses and stone alleys. Outside the walls, the town has the Korais Library, established in 1792, which houses over 250,000 volumes and rare manuscripts. The central square, Vounaki, and the adjacent public gardens provide a green contrast to the dense urban layout. Chios Town is a major educational and shipping hub, reflecting the island's status as a traditional powerhouse in the global Greek merchant marine industry.
