Chora of Folegandros is regarded as one of the most aesthetically pleasing settlements in the Cyclades. Built on the edge of a sheer cliff 200 meters high, the town consists of the medieval Kastro and the more modern Chorio. The Kastro is a Venetian settlement dating from 1212, with the outer walls of its houses bordering the precipice directly. Chora is distinguished by its successive, shaded squares lined with plane trees, creating a unique social ambiance. Above the town, a prominent zigzag path leads to the Church of Panagia, which sits majestically on a rock and serves as a major pilgrimage site. The architecture strictly adheres to Cycladic traditions, featuring white walls, colorful wooden balconies, and cobblestone alleys. Folegandros has managed to preserve its tranquility and simplicity despite its growing popularity. The town provides spectacular sunsets often compared to those of Santorini, yet in a significantly more serene environment.
