💡 Tips
- Explore Mykonos Town (Chora) early in the morning before 9 AM to experience the whitewashed streets without the massive cruise ship crowds.
- Taxis are notoriously limited (only about 30 on the whole island). Use the local bus network (KTEL) or book transfers well in advance.
- The famous windmills (Kato Mili) are best photographed at sunset, but expect heavy winds and large crowds.
- Tap water is generally not recommended for drinking; rely on bottled water, though using tap water for brushing teeth is fine.
🍽 Food
A peppery, locally produced cheese often served as a meze. Try it in traditional tavernas inland.
A local cured pork delicacy, similar to prosciutto, found at traditional butcher shops and menus in Chora.
Escape the club beaches and head to quieter bay tavernas for freshly grilled octopus and fish.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots

Located in the heart of the Cyclades archipelago, Mykonos features a coastal landscape dominated by traditional cubic houses and narrow paved streets. The island's main town, Chora, is home to the iconic 16th-century windmills (Kato Mili) and the Little Venice district, where buildings stand directly at the water's edge. The coastline is indented with numerous bays and sandy shores, ranging from organized resort areas to quieter coves. The southern coast has well-known spots such as Platys Gialos, Ornos, and Paranga, while Megali Ammos and Agios Stefanos lie closer to the main port. Other notable coastal sections include Agios Ioannis, Kapari, and the northern stretches near Agios Sostis. Fishing and maritime trade historically shaped the local economy before the shift toward international tourism in the mid-20th century. Today, the island maintains its maritime traditions while providing extensive infrastructure around its beaches, including Agia Anna and Korfos, which serve as hubs for water sports and swimming.
