Kos is the third largest island in the Dodecanese group, possessing rich historical layers from ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. The island is known as the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of western medicine, whose name is preserved by the famous plane tree in Kos town and the terraced ruins of the nearby Asklepion healing center. The main town also features an extensive network of cycling paths that traverse the flat eastern terrain, connecting the port directly to the surrounding coastal areas. The island features over 100 kilometers of coastline. The southern shore is dominated by the wide, fine sands of Paradise Beach, as well as Camel Beach and Volcana beach, where underwater volcanic gases occasionally form bubbles in the sea. Agios Stefanos Bay is unique because the columns of a 5th-century early Christian basilica stand right on the sandy beach, facing the small islet of Kastri. On the Kefalos peninsula, Limnionas serves as a sheltered fishing port, while Kochilari in the northwest is a favored base for windsurfers. Further along the coastal strip, the long, wind-swept dunes of Lagada Beach, Polemi, and Polemi Beach stretch out. In the eastern part of the island around Kos town, you can find the pebbled stretches of Achinos Beach and Faros, along with Agios Fokas Beach, providing easy access to the Therma hot springs bubbling up along Aegean volcanic fault lines. Kos effectively combines massive tourism infrastructure with significant archaeological heritage.
