Ermoupoli, the majestic capital of Syros and the administrative center of the Cyclades, stands as a unique neoclassical jewel in the heart of the Aegean Sea. Unlike the Cycladic norm of cubic white houses, Ermoupoli was built as a grand maritime city during the mid-19th century by wealthy refugees fleeing the Greek War of Independence. Its urban design is characterized by marble-paved streets, monumental public structures, and aristocratic mansions that reflect its status as the former commercial engine of modern Greece. The centerpiece of the city is Miaoulis Square, dominated by the magnificent Town Hall, a masterpiece by German architect Ernst Ziller completed in 1898. The neighborhood of Vaporia, known as the 'Little Venice of Syros,' features sea-facing captain's houses and the striking blue-domed Church of Agios Nikolaos. Facing each other across the harbor are two hills representing the island's dual religious identity: the Orthodox community on the hill of Vrontado and the medieval Roman Catholic settlement of Ano Syros. Today, Ermoupoli remains a sophisticated hub for the arts, hosting the world-renowned AnimaSyros animation festival and regular performances at the Apollo Theatre, which was modeled after La Scala in Milan.
