The Shai Hills Resource Reserve is located in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, approximately 50 kilometers northeast of the capital city, Accra. Established in 1962, the protected area covers roughly 51 square kilometers and is characterized by a group of prominent granite inselbergs rising sharply from the surrounding savanna plains. Historically, these hills served as a fortified home for the Shai people until the British colonial administration expelled them in 1892. Today, the landscape protects diverse wildlife, including baboons, antelopes, and over 170 species of birds inhabiting the dry evergreen forests. Geologically, the hills are noted for their cave systems, which were once used for religious ceremonies and strategic defense. The reserve is a significant site for eco-tourism and provides insights into West African pre-colonial settlement patterns and the specific geology of the Akwapim-Togo mountain range.

Getting there
This small range of hills located close to the capital is optimally accessed via a main highway. The primary entry point is remarkably easy to locate, making the site a highly popular and straightforward destination for daily visitors.
Best season
Given that the region lies in the tropics, visitors benefit most from arriving during the dry months when visibility is clearest. Early morning hours are particularly rewarding for engaging in birdwatching under cooler temperatures.
Terrain & paths
The terrain consists of a distinct mix of flat grasslands and abruptly rising rocky formations. The main pathways are relatively well-trodden, but the final ascents to the rocky peaks do require mild scrambling over large boulders.
What to bring
It is highly recommended to wear lightweight hiking clothes and grippy athletic shoes that provide decent traction on smooth rock. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen, as consistent shade is often exceedingly scarce up on the hills.
Parking
Secure parking spaces are conveniently available right at the designated assembly points at the base of the hills. Vehicle parking there is well-organized and frequently serves as the core meeting spot for guided tours or large groups.
Safety
Visitors must strictly stick to the official routes and remain perpetually cautious regarding encounters with local monkeys. Climbing on the unsecured rocks should only be attempted when absolutely dry, using all necessary physical caution.
Time needed
A typical excursion generally lasts between two and four hours, heavily depending on exactly how many of the hills are climbed. This duration is perfectly adequate to enjoy the scenic views and return comfortably to the starting point.
