The Shai Hills Resource Reserve is a significant protected area located in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, covering approximately 51 square kilometers within the coastal savanna zone. The terrain is characterized by prominent granite hills and rock outcrops that rise sharply from the surrounding plains, providing a unique microclimate. Historically, the area was the ancestral home of the Shai people, and archaeological evidence in the caves points to their settlement patterns and ritual practices before the late 19th century. Established as a forest reserve in 1962, it was later designated as a resource reserve to safeguard its ecological and historical assets. The reserve is home to a variety of wildlife, including olive baboons, green monkeys, and several antelope species such as the kob, along with over 170 recorded bird species. Getting there
This hilly protected area located near the capital can be comfortably reached via well-maintained national roads. Due to the very short distance from urban centers, the journey is frequently managed by private car or organized tours.
Best season
The drier months of the year offer the most comfortable conditions for wildlife observation and general hiking. During the active rainy season, several unpaved trails within the reserve can quickly become slippery or totally impassable.
Terrain & paths
The reserve is heavily characterized by striking rock formations and savannah landscapes, which occasionally include steep ascents. The hiking trails vary greatly in difficulty but often require a reasonable degree of surefootedness.
What to bring
Sturdy, ankle-high footwear is strongly recommended to navigate the sometimes highly uneven paths. A wide-brimmed hat for sun protection, ample water, and binoculars for spotting antelopes and birds should not be missing from your bag.
Parking
Secure and easily accessible parking facilities are generally available right at the main entrance and adjacent administrative buildings. This is also where official registration occurs before visitors can proceed deeper into the reserve.
Safety
Leaving the officially marked trails is strictly prohibited in this wildlife-inhabited terrain. Visitors are frequently required to be accompanied by rangers to completely ensure they do not inadvertently approach dangerous animals.
Time needed
Most excursions into the reserve are strategically designed as half-day tours, typically lasting about three to five hours. This is usually plenty of time to climb the central rock features and spot the primary species of wildlife.
