VALCO Aluminum Smelter (Ghana)

Weather…

The Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) is Ghana's largest aluminum smelter and a major industrial consumer of hydroelectric power. Located in the port city of Tema, the facility commenced operations in 1967 as a key part of an integrated national development plan to utilize energy from the Akosombo Dam. The smelter has an installed capacity of approximately 200,000 tons of primary aluminum per year, featuring five separate potlines for electrolysis. VALCO currently processes imported alumina, although the Ghanaian government has long-term plans to supply the smelter with domestically produced alumina from local bauxite reserves. As the single largest customer for electricity from the Volta River Authority, VALCO is central to Ghana's energy and industrial strategy. The plant was a joint venture with US-based Kaiser Aluminum for decades before becoming fully state-owned. Despite global aluminum price volatility, the smelter remains a symbol of Ghana's industrialization goals and a significant contributor to the country's export earnings.
