Set in the cool Akuapem Hills of Ghana's Eastern Region, Aburi is a favorite getaway for both locals and tourists. The town's premier attraction is the Aburi Botanical Gardens, established in 1890. These expansive gardens feature towering palm avenues, exotic plant species, and a peaceful retreat from the heat and noise of the nearby capital city, Accra. Beyond the gardens, Aburi is widely famous for its artisan village. The Aburi Crafts Village is a bustling market where skilled local craftsmen create and sell beautiful traditional wood carvings, masks, and furniture. It is the well-suited place to pick up authentic Ghanaian souvenirs. Gastronomically, local eateries offer fresh mountain pineapples and traditional dishes like Red Red (bean stew with plantains). Aburi is extremely accessible, located just a 45-minute drive up the mountain from Accra. The winding road gives great views of the cityscape below. Because of its milder hill climate, Aburi makes for a fantastic year-round destination, with weekends being particularly popular for day trips, retreats, and family picnics.
