Tema is Ghana's primary industrial city and home to the nation's largest seaport. Located about 25 kilometers east of Accra along the Gulf of Guinea, it is a centrally planned city designed in the 1950s by the Greek architect Constantinos Doxiadis. The city was built to accommodate the massive industrial expansion surrounding the newly constructed deep-water harbor. Tema is organized into numbered sectors, providing it with a uniquely structured urban layout compared to other Ghanaian cities. Economically, it serves as the industrial heart of the country, featuring an oil refinery, aluminum smelters, and various manufacturing plants. The Port of Tema handles the vast majority of Ghana's international trade and functions as a crucial transit point for landlocked nations like Burkina Faso. A distinctive geographic feature is that the Greenwich Meridian passes directly through the city, making Tema one of the few places in the world situated exactly on the 0-degree longitude line.
