Shai Hills Savanna (Ghana)

Weather…

The Shai Hills Resource Reserve is situated approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Accra and represents a unique protected enclave defined by its prominent granite inselbergs. Geographically, it encompasses a diverse mosaic of savanna grassland and dry evergreen forest within the Accra Plains. Covering an area of about 51 square kilometers, the reserve was officially established in 1962 to safeguard indigenous wildlife and preserve significant archaeological sites. Historically, these hills served as the ancestral home of the Shai people until their forced relocation by British colonial authorities in 1892; today, ancient caves and stone fortifications remain as testaments to their former habitation. The reserve's fauna is diverse, featuring prominent populations of olive baboons, kob antelopes, ostriches, and over 170 recorded bird species. The vegetation transitions from open scrubland in the plains to dense thickets on the rocky slopes. Due to its accessibility from the capital, Shai Hills is a major destination for hiking, rock climbing, and wildlife photography. It stands as a vital site for both the preservation of Shai cultural heritage and the provision of ecological recreation for the Greater Accra metropolitan area.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Accessible via the main highway departing from Accra towards Akosombo; travelers typically hire a local taxi or use private transport. The main gate usually serves as the central registration point and entryway for visitors.
📅
Best season
The dry season, generally from November to March, has the best wildlife viewing as animals gather near water sources and the vegetation is less dense. Avoiding the heavy rains ensures significantly better road conditions.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Expect a mix of flat savanna grassland interspersed with impressive, rugged rocky outcrops which require some scrambling if you decide to climb. The main trails are generally well-marked and relatively easy to navigate on foot.
🎒
What to bring
Lightweight, breathable clothing and sturdy walking shoes are essential for exploring the trails and rocky areas comfortably. Bring strong sun protection, a wide hat, binoculars for wildlife spotting, and plenty of drinking water.
🅿️
Parking
Secure parking is typically available right at the reserve's main entrance or adjacent visitor center area. Most guided tours and hiking excursions commence directly from this designated parking zone, making it a convenient base.
⚠️
Safety
Visitors are usually required to be accompanied by an official guide due to the presence of wild animals, including baboons and antelopes. Keep a safe distance from wildlife and be particularly cautious of uneven footing on the rocks.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical visit lasts between two to four hours, which allows enough time for a guided walking tour, wildlife observation, and perhaps exploring the caves. Early morning visits are often the most rewarding due to cooler temperatures.
