Ashaiman is a rapidly expanding city in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, located just east of the industrial hub of Tema. The town was originally founded in the 17th century by Nii Ashai as a small farming settlement, which gave the area its name. During the latter half of the 20th century, Ashaiman experienced explosive population growth, primarily serving as a residential area for workers employed in the nearby Tema harbor and industries. Today, it stands as an independent municipal district and an animated commercial center known for its intense urban activity and high population density. The city is famous for its large, bustling markets and a business environment that operates nearly 24 hours a day. Despite the infrastructural pressures of rapid urbanization, Ashaiman has become a crucial transportation link connecting Accra with eastern Ghana and neighboring Togo. Its social fabric is remarkably diverse, drawing residents from all ethnic groups across the country.
