Teshie is a historic coastal town in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, positioned between the capital Accra and the industrial city of Tema. Founded in the early 18th century by Ga settlers, the town has maintained a resilient cultural heritage over the centuries. Teshie achieved international fame for its unique tradition of 'fantasy coffins', a craft pioneered by masters such as Kane Kwei and Paa Joe. These elaborately carved coffins take the shape of animals, vehicles, or everyday objects, symbolizing the life, status, or occupation of the deceased. Historically, the town is home to the remains of Fort Augustaborg, constructed by the Danes in 1787 and later ceded to the British. The local economy is traditionally centered around fishing, with the animated Ga canoes on the beach serving as a cultural landmark. Teshie is also the site of the Ghana Military Academy, adding to its national strategic importance.
