Khertvisi Fortress (Georgia)

Weather…

Khertvisi Fortress is one of the oldest and best-preserved castles in Georgia, strategically located on a rocky hill at the confluence of the Paravani and Mtkvari rivers. Early Georgian chronicles claim that Alexander the Great besieged a fortress on this site in the 4th century BC, although archaeological evidence points to later periods of construction. The existing walls and towers primarily date from the 10th to the 14th centuries. A significant inscription on the western tower records extensive reconstruction and strengthening of the fortifications in 1354. Throughout the Middle Ages, Khertvisi played a vital role in guarding the southern borders of the Georgian kingdom against foreign invasions. The fortress complex consists of an upper citadel perched on a steep cliff and a lower perimeter wall. Inside the citadel stands a small 10th-century church dedicated to Saint George. In 2007, Khertvisi was submitted for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of a joint nomination with Vardzia.
