Lake Arpi (Armenia)

Weather…

Lake Arpi is situated in the northwestern Shirak Province of Armenia at an elevation of approximately 2,025 meters above sea level. It is the second most significant lake in the country after Lake Sevan and forms the core of the Lake Arpi National Park, established in 2009. Originally a smaller natural lake, its size was significantly increased in 1951 with the construction of a dam to regulate water resources for the Akhuryan River's irrigation and power needs. The area is renowned for its extremely cold climate, with winter temperatures being among the lowest in the Caucasus region. Ecologically, the lake is of international importance, serving as a critical breeding ground for rare bird species such as the Dalmatian pelican and the Armenian gull. The surrounding wetlands and alpine meadows host over 600 species of plants. The national park aims to preserve this sensitive high-altitude ecosystem while encouraging sustainable ecotourism in one of Armenia's most remote and rugged areas.
