Katskhi Pillar (Georgia)

Weather…

The Katskhi Pillar is a spectacular natural limestone monolith rising 40 meters above the landscape in the Imereti region of western Georgia. Perched atop this narrow rock spire is a small hermitage dedicated to Saint Maximus the Confessor, with origins dating back to the 9th or 10th century. For centuries, the pillar was considered inaccessible and shrouded in local legends until it was first surveyed in 1944 by a group of climbers who documented the ancient ruins. The site includes a small church, a burial chamber, and the remains of an old wine cellar, proving that monks lived here in total isolation for extended periods. In the 1990s, the religious site was restored under the leadership of monk Maxime Qavtaradze, who lived at the top of the pillar for over two decades, following the tradition of stylites. Access to the summit is possible only via a steep metal ladder and is generally restricted to the monastic community for religious reasons. For visitors, the view of the pillar from the valley provides a powerful glimpse into the extreme asceticism of the early Orthodox Church. It remains one of Georgia’s most spiritual and mysterious destinations.
