Akhalkalaki, with around 8,000 inhabitants, is the seat of the homonymous municipality in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of southern Georgia, lying on the Javakheti Plateau at over 1,700 metres elevation and just 30 kilometres from the Turkish and Armenian borders. The harsh highland climate, with long snowy winters and cool summers, shapes both farming and architecture: low stone houses with flat earthen roofs and fields of potatoes, rye and hay dominate the landscape. The population is overwhelmingly ethnic Armenian, reflected in language, churches and festivals. Akhalkalaki has been documented since the 11th century and was an important medieval fortress town; the ruins of its triple-walled citadel still crown a rocky promontory above the valley. In the 19th century the town hosted a major Russian garrison, and the former military area continued to serve as a Russian base until 2007. Of touristic interest are the plateau lakes of Paravani, Khanchali and Madatapha with their bird colonies, the nearby extinct Abuli volcano and the cave city of Vardzia.
