Jvari Monastery
Jvari Monastery is a 6th-century Georgian Orthodox monastery located near Mtskheta, the ancient capital of Georgia. Perched on a rocky mountaintop at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, it stands as one of the most significant religious sites in the Caucasus. According to historical tradition, Saint Nino erected a large wooden cross on this site in the 4th century, replacing a pagan temple and reportedly performing miracles. The current main church was built between 590 and 605 AD during the reign of Prince Stephanos I. Its architectural design follows the tetraconch (four-conch) plan, which became a standard for medieval church architecture in the region. The exterior walls feature intricate bas-relief carvings, depicting biblical scenes and portraits of the founding noblemen. Recognized for its historical and architectural value, Jvari was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994. Today, it remains a major pilgrimage destination and a symbol of the early development of Christianity in Georgia.
