Kemijärvi Church (Finland)

Weather…

The current Kemijärvi Church is a symbol of Lapland's reconstruction following the Second World War. Completed in 1950 according to the designs of architect Bertel Liljequist, it replaced the previous 1832 wooden church that was destroyed in 1944 by retreating German troops. The church's architecture is characterized by a simple yet monumental style, blending Nordic traditions with modern 1950s elements. A unique historical highlight is the separate bell tower, built in 1774, which was one of the few structures to survive the wartime destruction. Inside, the church accommodates approximately 850 people and features an altarpiece by artist Aale Hakava depicting Jesus on the cross. The church is picturesquely situated on the shores of Lake Kemijärvi and serves as a vital spiritual center for Finland's northernmost city. Its location and history make it a significant place of contemplation and a monument to the resilience of the people of Lapland.
