Kajaani serves as the administrative capital of the Kainuu region in eastern Finland, positioned along the banks of the Kajaani River. Founded in 1651 by Count Per Brahe, the city’s origins are tied to the Kajaani Castle, built in 1604 on an island in the river to guard the eastern frontier. The castle's ruins, destroyed by Russian forces in 1716 during the Great Northern War, are a primary historical landmark today. During the 19th century, Kajaani was a vital hub for the tar industry, and it still features the world’s only working tar boat canal lock. The city is also famous as the home of Elias Lönnrot, the district physician who compiled the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, from folk songs collected in the surrounding area. Modern Kajaani has transitioned from a heavy reliance on the timber industry to a hub for high-performance computing, hosting the LUMI supercomputer, which ranks among the most powerful and eco-friendly systems globally.
