Kemi is a prominent industrial city situated on the Gulf of Bothnia in Lapland, at the mouth of the Kemijoki River. Established in 1869 by a decree from Tsar Alexander II, the city was intended to serve as a vital maritime gateway for the export of Lapland’s vast timber resources. To this day, the economy is underpinned by massive paper and pulp mills, along with a nearby chromium mine, which is the only one of its kind in the European Union. Kemi is globally renowned for its unique Arctic tourism attractions, most notably the SnowCastle (LumiLinna), rebuilt every winter from ice and snow, and the icebreaker Sampo, which provides passenger cruises through the frozen sea. The city marks a transition from the maritime coastal environment to the rugged wilderness of the North. Kemi also serves as a key regional educational and logistical hub, featuring a deep-water harbor in Ajos that facilitates international trade.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
