Kokkola, known as Karleby in Swedish, is the capital of the Central Ostrobothnia region and a significant port city on the Gulf of Bothnia. Established in 1620 by King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, the town grew into a major global hub for the tar trade during the 18th century. A unique historical highlight occurred in 1854 during the Crimean War, when local residents captured a British landing craft at the Skirmish of Halkokari; the vessel remains on display in a local park to this day. The city's architectural identity is defined by Neristan, one of Finland's most extensive and best-preserved historical wooden districts, consisting of several blocks of traditional 18th and 19th-century homes. Today, Kokkola is a modern industrial center, particularly noted for its high concentration of inorganic chemical industries and maritime engineering. Its harbor is one of the busiest in Finland for bulk cargo, serving as a vital link for the country's export economy.
