💡 Tips
- You can easily walk across the border to Haparanda in Sweden at Victoria Square. Keep in mind that Sweden is in a different time zone (one hour behind Finland)!
- Because of the border, some places might accept Swedish Krona, but paying by card is the easiest and most widely accepted method.
- During winter, the Torne River freezes. Stick to the officially marked ice paths if you want to experience walking on the frozen river safely.
- In summer, you will experience the Midnight Sun. Pack a sleep mask if you are sensitive to light, as the sun doesn't fully set.

Tornio is situated at the mouth of the Tornionjoki river in southwestern Lapland, right on the border with Sweden. Founded in 1621 by decree of King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden, Tornio is the oldest town in Lapland and has functioned as a vital commercial hub in the Arctic region for centuries. A unique global phenomenon is the twin city of Tornio-Haparanda, where the Finnish and Swedish municipalities are seamlessly integrated, sharing infrastructure and an international shopping district. The Tornio wooden church, completed in 1686, is an exceptional example of neoclassical timber architecture. Economically, the town is dominated by the Outokumpu stainless steel mill, which is among the largest facilities of its kind in the world. The Tornionjoki river is celebrated as one of Europe's premier salmon fishing rivers, drawing anglers from across the globe. Its location on the Gulf of Bothnia grants the city a maritime character, serving as a prominent symbol of Nordic cross-border cooperation.
