Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland, situated at the confluence of the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers right on the Arctic Circle. The city was almost entirely destroyed during World War II but was meticulously rebuilt according to a master plan by Alvar Aalto, who arranged the streets in the shape of reindeer antlers. Today, Rovaniemi is internationally famous as the official hometown of Santa Claus, with Santa Claus Village attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Beyond tourism, it is a significant administrative hub and home to the University of Lapland, the northernmost university in the EU. A cultural centerpiece is Arktikum, a museum and science center that explores the Arctic environment and the history of the indigenous Sami people. During winter, the city is a premier destination for viewing the Northern Lights and embarking on husky and reindeer safaris. Rovaniemi serves as a strategic gateway to the vast Arctic wilderness and a commercial link for Northern Finland.
