Water temperature…
Kuusamo is a major outdoor destination in eastern Finland, situated near the Russian border. The area is dominated by the Ruka ski resort, which features 35 slopes and a long winter season often stretching into May. During the snowy months, it is a prime spot for cross-country skiing, reindeer safaris, and viewing the Northern Lights in a pristine wilderness setting. In the summer, the focus shifts to hiking and water activities. Kuusamo is the gateway to the Oulanka National Park and the starting point for the 80-kilometer Karhunkierros (Bear's Trail), Finland's most famous hiking route. The park is renowned for its steep canyons, rushing rapids, and iconic hanging bridges. The local rivers offer some of the best whitewater rafting and fly-fishing opportunities in Northern Europe. Local cuisine heavily features reindeer, forest berries, and vendace caught from the crystal-clear lakes. The town is served by its own airport, making it easily accessible from Helsinki. Accommodation ranges from cozy traditional log cabins with private saunas to high-end hotels. While winter is peak season for skiers, the 'ruska' period in September brings striking autumn colors to the landscape, attracting many nature photographers.
