Luosto is located in the heart of Lapland within the Sodankylä municipality and gives a serene escape in a pristine Arctic environment. The village is famous for its atmospheric log cabin accommodation, with almost all buildings constructed from traditional silver-grey 'kelo' wood. As part of the Pyhä-Luosto National Park, it features 7 ski slopes and an extensive cross-country skiing network. Luosto is the convenient choice for travelers seeking a peaceful, smaller-scale resort with a strong focus on nature. The resort's crowning jewel is the Lampivaara Amethyst Mine, located on top of a nearby fell. It is Europe's only active amethyst mine that welcomes visitors, allowing them to dig for their own lucky stone while learning about the area's geology. In winter, guests reach the mine via a special snow train called the 'Amethyst Pendolino'. Other popular activities include reindeer safaris, husky sledding, and snowshoeing through ancient forests. Its remote location makes it an excellent spot for Northern Lights viewing. Local dining is cozy and features Lappish staples like reindeer sauté, wild berries, and fresh lake fish. Luosto is easily accessible from Rovaniemi Airport via a 90-minute shuttle bus service. The best time to visit for snow activities is from late January to April, while September is well-suited for hikers wanting to see the autumn colors and the first sightings of the Aurora Borealis.
