Nykarleby (Swedish: Nykarleby, Finnish: Uusikaarlepyy) is located on the west coast of Finland and is a town with deep literary and historical roots. It was founded in 1620 by King Gustav II Adolf. Its most significant cultural landmark is Kuddnäs, the birthplace of Zacharias Topelius, one of Finland's most influential 19th-century writers. The manor museum features an authentic glimpse into the bourgeois life of that era. The town is bisected by the Lapuanjoki river, with banks lined by parks and historic structures. Another highlight is the Jyllas narrow-gauge railway, a museum train reminding visitors of the region's industrial past. Nykarleby's wooden church, built in 1708, is one of the few Finnish churches to survive the Great Northern War unscathed and features beautiful ceiling paintings. For nature enthusiasts, the nearby coast gives quiet bays and hiking trails. The town is also famous for its 'Great Bridge' (Stora bron), a popular subject for photography.
