Suomutunturi (Finland)

Weather…

Suomutunturi is a prominent fell located in the municipality of Kemijärvi in Finnish Lapland, reaching an elevation of 410 meters above sea level. It is characterized by its steep profile, which stands out significantly compared to the gentler hills of the surrounding area. Geologically, the fell consists of extremely resistant quartzite that has withstood the erosive forces of ice ages over millions of years. The area was developed for tourism as early as the 1960s and hosts one of Finland's most traditional ski resorts. The Arctic Circle passes only a few kilometers south of the fell, significantly influencing the climate and ensuring long, snowy winters. The vegetation on the slopes is dominated by dense boreal coniferous forests, while the summit area exhibits sparser conditions. From the top, a wide panoramic view opens up over the lake landscape of Kemijärvi and the untouched wilderness of the region. Today, Suomutunturi is a major destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, and Northern Lights observation.
