Ungru Castle Ruins (Estonia)

Weather…

The Ungru Castle ruins, located near Haapsalu in western Estonia, are considered one of the most impressive examples of Neo-Baroque architecture in the Baltic states. Construction began in 1893 under Baron Ewald von Ungern-Sternberg, who envisioned the castle as a precise replica of Merseburg Castle in Germany for his beloved fiancée. Tragically, the monumental structure was never fully completed, as the Baron died shortly before its finishing stages and his bride-to-be also passed away prematurely. During World War II and the subsequent Soviet era, the uninhabited building suffered significant damage, particularly when its stones were scavenged to build the nearby Rohuküla military airfield. The remaining skeletal limestone walls, lacking roofs and windows, project a melancholic grandeur that has made the site a popular subject for photography and tourism. Despite its ruined state, the intricate facade decorations and complex floor plan still reveal the luxurious ambitions of the noble family that once commissioned this grand architectural project.
