Sindi is a town in southwestern Estonia, situated on the left bank of the Pärnu River, approximately 14 kilometers upstream from the city of Pärnu. The town's modern trajectory began in 1833 when industrialist Johann Christoph Wöhrmann established a prominent cloth factory that served as the regional economic anchor for over a century. The impressive 19th-century red-brick factory buildings still characterize the townscape, standing as monuments to Estonia's early industrial era. A landmark environmental achievement occurred between 2018 and 2020 with the removal of the Sindi Dam, a large-scale project aimed at restoring the river's natural flow for migratory fish like Atlantic salmon. Sindi is also notable for its functionalist town hall built in 1937 and its well-preserved clusters of historical workers' housing. Today, the town of about 3,800 residents is a peaceful residential community that harmonizes its manufacturing legacy with modern ecological restoration goals.
