Lääne-Valja Lowland (Estonia)

Weather…

The Lääne-Valja Lowland is part of the broader West Estonian coastal plain, characterized by its flat topography and immediate proximity to the Baltic Sea. The region emerged following the retreat of the continental ice sheet, when the area was initially submerged under the waters of the various stages of the Baltic Sea. Due to post-glacial isostatic rebound, the land gradually rose, creating extensive coastal meadows and wetlands. Geologically, the bedrock consists of Silurian limestone, often covered by only a thin layer of marine deposits and humus. This results in a unique flora, including lime-loving plants and rare orchid species. Historically, the land was used for grazing, which helped preserve the valuable alvar communities. The region is now of significant ecological importance, serving as a vital resting ground for migratory birds on the East Atlantic Flyway.
