Keila Waterfall (Estonia)

Weather…

Keila Waterfall on the Keila River in Harju County is one of Estonia's most powerful waterfalls, standing 6 meters high and reaching up to 70 meters in width. It is located near the historic Keila-Joa Manor, whose neo-Gothic main building dates back to 1833. Historically, the waterfall was a vital site for watermills and houses one of the country's oldest hydroelectric power plants, which was renovated in 1928. Geographically, the fall marks a significant step in the Estonian limestone plateau, having carved a deep gorge into the substrate over millennia. The surrounding parkland covers over 80 hectares and is renowned for its suspension bridges and dendrological diversity. The waterfall is a favorite destination for wedding parties and nature photographers, especially during the spring floods when the water volume is at its peak.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The third largest waterfall in Estonia is generally very easy to reach via the well-maintained road network in Harju County. Visitors can mostly drive their cars without any issues directly into the immediate vicinity of this famous natural monument.
📅
Best season
A visit to this impressively broad waterfall is often most striking during the spring when the seasonal snowmelt is actively occurring. However, even in midsummer or during winter, when the water freezes spectacularly, the scenery is typically pleasant.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The pathways surrounding the waterfall and running along the river are mostly well-developed and quite easy to walk on. Near the drop-off edge and on the adjoining rocks, however, the ground can often be rather slippery due to the constant water spray.
🎒
What to bring
To safely explore the sometimes wet paths near the water, shoes with a good, slip-resistant tread are highly recommended for all visitors. A light, water-repellent jacket also provides great protection from the fine mist that often surrounds the waterfall.
🅿️
Parking
Parking spaces designated for visitors are mostly located just a short, pleasant walk away from the site's main natural attraction. On busy, well-attended weekends, it is often advisable to arrive a bit earlier in the day to secure a convenient parking spot.
⚠️
Safety
For obvious safety reasons, visitors should generally keep a sensible distance from the entirely unsecured edge of the plunging waterfall. Especially during wet or icy weather, increased overall caution is strictly required on the riverside rocks and paths.
⏱️
Time needed
A standard sightseeing visit to this rushing body of water typically lasts roughly one to two solid hours for the average traveler. This timeframe is mostly completely sufficient to photograph the waterfall and thoroughly enjoy the lush green surroundings.
