💡 Tips

  • Climb the rotunda watchtower of Qurayyat Fort for the best panoramic views of the town and coast.
  • Wadi Dayqah Dam is a favorite local picnic spot; visit in the late afternoon for cooler mountain air.
  • Look for flamingos and migratory birds in the salt marshes and lagoons near the coastline.
  • Qurayyat Fort is typically closed on Fridays and Saturdays, so plan your visit for a weekday.
  • If you plan to kayak at the dam reservoir, carry cash as card machines in the mountains can be unreliable.

Qurayyat is a coastal wilayat in Muscat province with about 65,000 inhabitants, located about 95 kilometers southeast of the capital on the Gulf of Oman. The city was historically an important port and was plundered in 1507 by the Portuguese conqueror Afonso de Albuquerque before he moved on to Muscat. The 19th-century Qurayyat Fort with its pink walls was erected under Imam Asim ibn Ali. The Wadi Dayqah Dam, about 25 kilometers northwest, is, with a height of 75 meters and a storage capacity of 100 million cubic meters, the largest dam in the Sultanate of Oman and was completed in 2012. Qurayyat is an important fishing town: sardines are preserved by traditional sun-drying. The nearby beaches and Wadi Shab are popular excursion destinations.
