Haapsalu Bishop's Castle (Estonia)

Weather…

The Haapsalu Bishop's Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Estonia, serving for centuries as the administrative center of the Bishopric of Ösel-Wiek. Construction began in the 13th century and continued through the 16th century, with the fortress evolving to meet defensive needs and ecclesiastical functions. A central feature of the complex is the Dome Cathedral, the largest single-nave church in the Baltic region, renowned for its exceptional acoustics and the legend of the 'White Lady.' According to local lore, the ghost of a lady appears in the baptistery window during full moons in August. The massive walls and the prominent clock tower remain defining landmarks of Haapsalu's skyline. During the Livonian War, the castle suffered significant damage and eventually lost its military relevance. Today, the castle grounds house a modern museum detailing the history of the bishopric and medieval life. The expansive courtyard is frequently used as a venue for cultural events, historical reenactments, and concerts.
