The massive walls and the prominent clock tower remain defining landmarks of Haapsalu's skyline. During the Livonian War, the castle suffered significant damage and eventually lost its military relevance. Today, the castle grounds house a modern museum detailing the history of the bishopric and medieval life. The expansive courtyard is frequently used as a venue for cultural events, historical reenactments, and concerts.

The castle typically has seasonal hours, open daily from May to September, winter weekends only. Current times are on the official Haapsalu tourism site.

A visit to the castle takes about 1 to 1.5 hours if exploring the entire courtyard and towers. Those visiting the adjacent museum should allow 2 hours.
